If you haven’t noticed, Fishnet Cinema has been on a bit of hiatus for over a month now. This is a small blog (site? platform?) and it’s run by just one gal (me) and ya girl got burned out. Starting something from scratch is always hard, even something that is supposed to be a fun feminist film nerd space more than anything else. I don’t make any money from this site, and neither to do any of my guest writers. And I would love to get to a place where I can change that.
That’s where Patreon comes in. Becoming my patron means that you support the writing I do for Fishnet Cinema, the podcasting I do with my Shady Lady Podcast as well as the unpaid writing I do on Medium. I’m a year out of graduate school for writing, and I have yet to secure a paid position in my field. That’s not a shock by any means. But it is a factor that gives me stress, determination and humbles me all at once, on a daily basis.
Getting patrons means that there are people out there who appreciate my work and value me despite my lack of cashflow and industry clout, and that means the world to me.
I’m just a girl who wants to write for and about film and TV through a point of view that is often not considered. The Ground in Which I Stand as a black, queer, disabled, feminist black woman from the South is of high importance to me, and when you support me, I know you that’s of value to you as well. It’s encouraging to know that my voice matters and that hopefully I will have the ability to gain a platform to uplift other marginalized voices.
So, thank you, to my 3 new patrons: Mike Finke, Samuel Fried, and BN-12.
I deeply appreciate you.
